The spouse of time traveler HBO Collection group Rose Leslie & Theo James

Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie will direct HBO’s upcoming adaptation of the science fiction romance novel The wife of the time traveler alongside the dissident actor Theo James. The hugely successful debut novel by the author Audrey Niffenegger was adapted for the big screen back in 2009, with Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana taking the lead roles, in which Leslie and James will now enter.

The Time Traveller’s Wife was released in 2003 and was very well received by critics. It eventually became a bestseller, winning the Exclusive Books Boeke Prize and a British Book Award. The synopsis for the novel reads; “Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry 31. Impossible, but true, because Henry was one of the first people to be diagnosed with chrono-displacement disorder The genetic clock is regularly reset and he finds himself displaced in time, drawn out of his life, past and future in moments of emotional gravity, his disappearance is spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

The story of Clare and Henry plays out from both angles, showing the impact time travel has had on their marriage and passionate love for one another. They try to lead a normal life and pursue familiar goals: steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, which makes their story very moving and unforgettable. “

Rose Leslie and Theo James, the first to be announced, will star Clare and Henry, respectively. Leslie is best known for starring as Wildling Ygritte in HBO’s big hit fantasy series Game of Thrones. She is also known for roles like Downton Abbey and The Good Fight on the small screen, as well as starring alongside Vin Diesel in The Last Witch Hunter on the big screen.

As for Theo JamesHe is best known for his role as Four in the Divergent franchise, in which he appeared in the installments Divergent, Insurgent and Allegiant. James also starred in Netflix’s How It Ends, the hugely popular fantasy sequel, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, and the animated series Castlevania.

This new version of Henry and Clare’s time-jumping love story has been made available by HBO. Former Doctor Who showrunner and writer Steven Moffat was on board as executive producer alongside Sue Vertue and Brian Minchin. Moffat, who also co-created the acclaimed BBC series Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, clearly has an affinity for time travel stories and should be more than adept at translating The Time Traveller’s Wife from side to screen.

Adapting the novel is something Moffat has wanted to do for a while, with the author even taking inspiration from the story during his Doctor Who run. “I read Audrey Niffenegger’s ‘The Time Traveller’s Wife’ and fell in love with her many years ago. In fact, I wrote a ‘Doctor Who’ episode called ‘The Girl In The Fireplace’ in direct response to it.” Moffat said in a statement when HBO first announced The Time Traveller’s Wife.

A release date has not yet been set for HBO’s The Time Traveller’s Wife. This comes to us from diversity.
