Space Jam 2 clip reveals Zendaya when Lola Bunny sends fans into a Tasmanian whirlwind

This weekend, new footage of Space Jam: A New Legacy was released unannounced on Twitter, and Twitter went crazy over the reveal of Lola Bunny’s voice. In the new film, Lola is played by Disney darling Zendaya, and if there’s one guaranteed way to get social media to talk about a movie, it’s with the participation of the Greatest Showman star. As soon as the short video clip came out, Zendaya’s army of fans took over the microblogging site to beguile the actress and discuss some of her most iconic work, but not all of them feel that she is right as the voice of a character that has a few issues for continuation has caused.

The main mood among Twitter users was simple. We love Zendaya, but that just sounds like Zendaya and not Lola Bunny. When it comes to voice acting, there are some voices that are instantly recognizable and in many cases it doesn’t matter. James Earl Jones in The Lion King, Billy Connolly in Brave, and Michael Caine in Cars 2 all sounded the same, but the characters were new and there to be made their own. They have other cases like Mike Myers in Shrek where they adapt to the character. Having an already established character – and let’s face it, there has been more press about Lola’s character than about anyone else – and giving them a voice that is both distinctive and well known is a bit of a gamble. So far it doesn’t seem to be paying off.

“I love Zendaya so much, but her voice doesn’t damn well match Lola,” said one user. Another added, “Well – Zendaya is the answer to any question … but not this one.” Another commented, “I hope this isn’t the end result because the mixing definitely doesn’t work. Also, her voice needs more personality. She always sounds like that, don’t let me down, Zendaya.” Somebody else seemed to pinpoint the problem and said, “hmm …….. mmm … I love Zendaya, but that just sounds like Zendaya is speaking in her normal voice.”

I hope this is not the end result as mixing is definitely off. In addition, her voice needs more personality. She always sounds so don’t let Zendaya let me down.

It wasn’t until a few months ago that Lola’s character hit the headlines when her new design reveal didn’t go down too well with fans of the 1996 Space Jam movie. Lola’s new design removed many of her curvier attributes, gave her more clothing, and generally focused less on the image the character had in the first film. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in March, director Malcolm D Lee commented, “This is 2021. It’s important to think about the authenticity of strong, capable female characters.” While that should be a plus, it sparked its own backlash in which many – many women – asked if this meant that sexy women couldn’t be “strong and capable”. It seems that sometimes not everyone does what is believed to be right.

With the reveal of Lola’s voice now making waves of its own, it seems that even casting one of the most bankable young actresses in the business can’t take a break for the live-action animation to continue or its furry star.
