Invasion Trailer: Sam Neill fends off a global alien attack
Apple has released the first trailer for its upcoming Invasion series. The show stars Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Peaky Blinders) while Oscar and Emmy nominee Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Star Wars Rebels) leads things behind the scenes. Apple describes the show as an engaging, character-driven series. As we can see from the trailer, life on Earth is badly disrupted by some extraterrestrial invaders. What do you want? At this point it is unclear. But what is clear is that humanity is in no way ready to deal with the consequences of such a great event.
The trailer opens with a glimpse of a happy family going through their morning routine. Things seem normal enough at first. But some ominous voice-over, courtesy of Sam Neill, occurs which allows an unsettling atmosphere to sneak in, even as we get more pictures of life going on around the world, seemingly with no problems. Slowly but surely, things are going wrong and this unsettling mood is intensifying. Widespread power outages. Crop circles. Nosebleeds. It all builds on a lot of action and destruction. Pure chaos. Only at the very end do we get our only glimpse of the impending extraterrestrial threat. We are also presented with the slogan “Hold on to your humanity”.
David Weil (Hunters) co-directs the show with Simon Kinberg. The show is written and produced by the couple. Jakob Verbruggen (The Alienist, The Fall) is directing the series. Verbruggen also acts as an executive producer. Audrey Chon (The Twilight Zone), Amy Kaufman (When They See Us), Katie O’Connell Marsh (Narcos, Hannibal) and Elisa Ellis are executive producers alongside Andrew Baldwin (The Outsider). Baldwin is also on board as a writer.
Invasion takes place on multiple continents and focuses on an alien invasion that offers different perspectives around the world. The cast includes Shamier Anderson (Bruised, Awake), Golshifteh Farahani (Extraction, Paterson, Body of Lies), Firas Nassar (Fauda) and Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool 2, The Outsider). Apple keeps things pretty vague about the plot for the most part. We’ll likely get at least one more trailer by the fall premiere, which may add a little more context. Or this can just be one of those stories that depend heavily on the audience becoming relatively blind.
This is the latest eye-catching original show made by Apple to gain traction in the streaming game. In competition with heavyweights like Netflix and Disney +, the technology company has produced hits like The Morning Show and Servant as well as the breakout comedy Ted Lasso. But the service as a whole has yet to really take off. But streaming is the future, and Apple has shown how serious they are in breaking into this space. Apple will initially debut three episodes of the first season with ten episodes. This is followed by new episodes every week, every Friday. Invasion hits Apple TV + on October 22nd.
