Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder in the death of George Floyd

The jury has passed a verdict in the trial of the former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

On Tuesday, April 20, the Hennepin District Court announced that a 12-person jury found chauvin guilty of accidental second degree murder, third degree murder and second degree manslaughter on May 25, 2020 George Floyd.

Chauvin will be sentenced at a later date. He faces a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.

After listening to testimony for three weeks, the jury began deliberating on Monday, April 19, and made its decision in less than 48 hours.

Last May, Chauvin and three other officers were arrested after Floyd died in custody. According to prosecutors, Chauvin knelt on the back of Floyd’s neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds, despite Floyd, who was handcuffed, said he had difficulty breathing.
