Annie Live! Next tune into NBC musical

The sun is going to be coming out on NBC this holiday season. Annie Live !, produced by Bob Greenblatt and Neil Meron, will air later this year, the network said on Wednesday.

“When we’re trying to attract a large live audience to NBC, we can’t think of a better way than restoring the network’s musical holiday tradition,” said Susan Rovner, chairwoman of entertainment content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “And there is no better partner than the incredible Neil Meron and Bob Greenblatt, who oversaw every live musical for the years he ran NBC. Under her leadership, Annie Live! will bring a new perspective to this timeless classic, combining a dynamic, world-class creative team with casting decisions that ensure this is a must for the whole family. “

“It’s a pleasure to come back to NBC and produce a new live musical, a form that I loved to bring back to life with my partners Neil Meron and the late Craig Zadan,” said Greenblatt. “And we’re thrilled to be working with Susan Rovner and her new team because they share our belief in the power of broadcast television to bring families together for events like this one.”

Adds Meron, “There are few musicals like Annie where you know the words for every song, and the overall message – especially in the troubled times we live in – is optimism. The song “Tomorrow” means more than ever and we do not lose the fact that even Franklin Roosevelt and his New Deal are affected by this little orphan who simply believes in the goodness of everyone! “

Based on the Little Orphan Annie comic, Annie’s original production ran for nearly six years (1977-1983) on Broadway and won seven Tony Awards. It has since become a global phenomenon, both on stage and on screen. In the most recent film adaptation, which was awarded a Razzie in 2015, Quvenzhané Wallis was seen as the title orphan opposite A-listers like Jamie Foxx, Rose Byrne, Cameron Diaz and Bobby Cannavale.

Previous NBC live music productions in 2013 included The Sound of Music Live! With Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer; Peter Pan Live! 2014 with Allison Williams and Christopher Walken; The Wiz Live !, 2015 with Amber Riley, Queen Latifah, and more; and 2016’s Hairspray Live !, with Ariana Grande, Dove Cameron, Jennifer Hudson, Kristin Chenoweth, Harvey Fierstein, and more; and 2018 Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert with John Legend, Brandon Victor Dixon and Sara Bareilles.
